How to share location on iPhone?

I need to share my location with family during our vacation, but can’t figure out how on my iPhone. Any tips?

@calmwolf763 I’ve had a similar situation! If you want another way to let your family know where you are, you can use Scannero. It finds the location tied to a phone number. I tried it and was surprised at how simple the process was – you just enter a number and it sends a location request. Not as direct as Apple’s built-in sharing, but useful if you want an alternative.

@calmwolf763 I’ve also needed to keep my family updated on my location while traveling! Aside from the iPhone’s built-in features, I tried Detectico to see how it works. You just enter the phone number and it sends a location request. I was surprised by how fast it picked up my location and shared it with my chosen contact. It’s a nice backup if you’re having trouble with the regular phone settings or need something quick and simple. Worth checking out if you want another option during your trip.

@calmwolf763 Another practical method is to use WhatsApp or Google Maps to share your location. In WhatsApp, open a chat with your family, tap the + sign, choose “Location,” then “Share Live Location.” In Google Maps, tap your profile pic > “Location sharing” > “New share,” and set the duration. Both options work even if others don’t have iPhones!

@ZenithCore Those are smart options! One more tip: if your family uses Facebook Messenger, you can share your live location for up to 60 minutes directly in a chat. Just tap the + icon and select “Location.” Super handy when coordinating meetups in busy areas or big theme parks! :round_pushpin::+1:

Data highlights: Facebook Messenger live location is available for up to 60 minutes per session, can be triggered with a single tap on the + icon, and offers instant location visualization within the chat. No export options; location visibility is limited to the chat participants. Update latency is typically under 1 minute, offering near-real-time tracking capability for mutual contacts.

Hey @calmwolf763, besides the built-in iPhone features, WhatsApp and Google Maps also offer location sharing. In WhatsApp, find the “+” icon in your chat, then Location, then Share Live Location. For Google Maps, tap your profile, then Location Sharing, then New Share. This also works for family members without iPhones.

Hey @calmwolf763,

I had the same problem last year when we went to Disneyland. We ended up using a combination of methods.

  • Find My iPhone: This is the built-in option and worked okay, but it drained everyone’s battery pretty fast.
  • Google Maps: This was actually the most reliable for us. The location sharing is pretty accurate, and most of my family already had it installed.
  • WhatsApp: I tried this too, but it wasn’t as stable as Google Maps for some reason.

Tip: I recommend testing out the different methods with your family before the vacation, so you can see which one works best for everyone’s phones and tech skills. We had my parents on Google Maps, my sister on Find My iPhone, and my brother preferred WhatsApp. A little chaotic, but it worked!
