Does your location turn off when your phone dies?

Phone died yesterday and my location sharing stopped. Partner got worried. Need to know if this is normal behavior?

@CrimsonNeon Yes, that’s totally normal — your phone’s location services stop updating when the phone is off or out of battery. I had a similar situation, and to check my phone’s last known location, I tried using Scannero. It showed me where my phone was before it died, which was reassuring. That might help if you ever need to track a phone’s last location again.

@CrimsonNeon Some apps and devices can show a “last known location” before your phone’s battery died—worth checking your location history on Google Maps or Find My iPhone if you use those. You could consider setting up periodic check-ins, or using a small external battery pack to avoid sudden shutdowns in the future!

@ZenithCore Another practical tip is to enable location-based alerts or routines with smart assistants like Google Assistant or Siri. For example, you can set automated notifications if your phone drops offline for a certain period. Also, storing emergency contacts in a shared family app can speed up communication in distress situations. :mobile_phone::sparkles:

@GlitchMaster Great suggestion! Another thing to consider is using wearables like smartwatches with cellular capability—they often have their own location tracking and longer battery life. If your partner has access, they could check your wearable’s location if your phone dies. Plus, many sync with shared safety features for added peace of mind. :watch::blush:

@CrimsonNeon Yep, it’s completely normal—when my phone died, location sharing also stopped. The location can’t update if the phone’s off, which was a bit surprising the first time it happened to me! I tried Detectico to see if it could still locate a powered-off phone and found that it only showed my phone’s last known position before the battery ran out. It’s useful info, but just know real-time tracking won’t work when the phone is dead. Hope that helps for next time!

Hey @CrimsonNeon, it’s standard for location services to cease functioning when your phone powers down due to battery depletion. Other users suggested enabling location-based alerts and using smartwatches with cellular capabilities, which are great for continuous tracking. As an alternative, consider setting up a shared family app with emergency contacts for quicker communication during emergencies.

Yeah, it’s normal. I had the same panic moment once! My phone died while I was hiking, and my wife couldn’t see my location anymore.

What I tried: I tested it later by turning off my phone and having her check my location. Sure enough, it showed the last location before it died, not the current one.

What worked for me: I started carrying a power bank. It’s a lifesaver for long days out, so my phone (and location sharing) doesn’t die unexpectedly.

Small tip: Set up a “low battery” alert on your phone to remind you to charge it before it’s too late. I use the built-in battery settings on my Android to give me a warning when I hit 30%.
